Getting continuous and uninterrupted drinking water supply is very important. The news now is additional pipelines are being laid at three places namely Velachery, Madipakkam and Keelkattalai in the Chennai city. By these additional pipelines water can be rerouted through this alternative network. The main purpose is to ensure the localities of Alandur, Pallavaram. Pammal and Tambaram get uninterrupted drinking water supply. It was in the month of July the construction of bridges on top which these pipelines would be placed began. According to an official it is clear that bridges at Shastri Nagar in Adambakkam and Balaji Nagar in Madipakkam have neared completion. He later spoke about how after the construction of bridge in Keelkattalai is finished then water pipes would be placed and connected to 100 MLD desalination plant and it would be superb.

An official belonging to metro water department expressed his thoughts. He spoke about the submission of necessary documents to the PWD or Public Works Department seeking permission to begin the construction of bridge in Keelkattalai. He later spoke about how after getting the clearance then the construction of the bridge would be completed and how the pipelines at the three above mentioned places would be connected to the upcoming 150 MLD 400 MLD desalination plants. He also spoke about the pipelines in the three places in Chennai getting connected to already existing desalination plant in Nemmeli. Drinking water would be supplied to Alandur once the work near Kakkan Bridge at Adambakkam adjoining the Velachery Lake gets completed. It is important to mention that the 2 pillars of the bridge are not built on the lake bed. The official later explained about how the construction was done in such a way that the bridge for the pipe comes at the same level as the present Kakkan Bridge. The pipe would not be obstructing the flow when the water flows from Adambakkam Lake to the Velachery Lake through the outlet.

It is known that Nemmeli desalination plant is present 35km south of Chennai city centre along the ECR. It is the second desalination plant in Chennai city and it constructed to provide piped water to South Chennai residents.
