The latest news is to teach the students belonging to 320 government schools about the sustainable management of plastic as well as other wastes, state government has tied up with a private educational research organisation. It is now revealed that SCERT or state council for educational research would integrate this waste management subject in 2 textbooks in the third term for class 6 and class 9 students. The school children would be taught about the reduction of pollution and about the sustainable management of plastic waste. It is known that beginning from 1st of January 2019 there would be ban on onetime use and throwaway plastics in TN.
WasteLess is an Auroville based organisation and since the year 2011 this organisation has been researching and developing many educational programmes for schools in the state of Tamil Nadu. The students belonging to the government schools in TN would be trained under programmes named ‘Garbology’ and ‘Know plastics” developed by the above mentioned organisation.
The superb piece of information is Ramco group would be supporting this initiative. In the first phase more than 320 schools in TN would be targeted and that is ten schools present in each district of TN.
According to the co-founder of WasteLess, Ribhu Vohra, programmes focus on hands on learning which the students could take at their homes or at schools or neighbourhood etc. The garbage programme would be scaled up to cover the students from class 6 to class 8 in 220 more schools in TN. This would take place once when phase one gets finished.
Ribhu Vohra later spoke about how this programme has as many as 9 interactive and educational classroom activities that are complementary with subjects like science, mathematics etc.
The school education minister Mr. K. A. Sengottaiyan expressed his views and spoke about how the new laws coupled with innovative education ways would be tremendous and it would protect the future generations from the burden of plastic pollution. The launch was scheduled to take place in the month of October and after the launch each school would be provided with training kit and teachers would be trained by the experts.
