To plant more saplings in the corporation parks and roadsides, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation is doing this now. It is revealed that GCC has roped more volunteers and a city based non-governmental organisation ‘Nizhal’ to create more green space.
Around 16 parks in Chennai city are maintained by the corporation and the maintenance works are taken up at regular intervals. For taking up work the corporation permits certain volunteers and NGOs based on their track record. This was confirmed by officials belonging to GCC.
Nizhal is Chennai city based organisation that is taking up the green works. According to Shoba Menon who is founder of Nizhal, a strong awareness is created by the volunteers about tree plantation and green cover in the parks plus in other areas in their locality. She spoke about how GCC was helping them to identify the lost green space. Later she explained how her organisation undertook work in Kotturpuram based Corporation Park and how local people were roped by them. The aim was to make the local people know about green space. She also hinted about identifying one more corporation park that had lost its sheen.
A resident of Kotturpuram later spoke about how the park was in shambles with the branches of trees blocking the pathway. He then revealed about the changes in the park and spoke about how the park gives new look with green cover. He added for the purpose of increasing the green cover he had joined the volunteers.
According to a senior official of GCC it is clear that works like tree plantations and cleaning were taken up by the corporation. He then spoke about roping in volunteers and NGO to plant saplings even as the corporation workers were taking up the maintenance works. He added that in a phased manner the works like planting and cleaning would be taken up in other corporation parks also.
