The State Election Commission of Tamil Nadu has planned to conduct the local elections in the state by February 2019.

There are 2 categories of local administration in Tamil Nadu – the urban or city local administration and the Panchayat Local Administration. There are 1.30 Lakhs posts in this set-up.

The elections to fill up the above posts is planned to be conducted in February by the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission.

Earlier, the preparations were done to conduct the local elections during October 2016. However, following the petition submitted by the political party DMK regarding the quota issue, the High Court cancelled the proposed elections at the last moment. After this, local elections were not conducted.

Presently, the census statistics of 2011 has been taken for consideration and the wards have been formed for the local elections accordingly and have been sent for approval by the government.

In this scenario, the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has now planned to conduct the state local elections during February.

Information is gathered from the internal circles of the State Election Commission that the new draft format of the details including new wards had been submitted to the state government in August. After scrutiny, the government had asked for some modifications. Accordingly, the modification work is now in progress.

Once the approval from the state government is obtained for this revised list, the wards will be categorized as per the quota system. 50% quota for women, 18% quota for the Scheduled Class and 1% for the Scheduled Tribe categories will be allotted. 6 weeks would be required for this activity. Once this is completed, the preparatory activities will be taken up district-wise. This would require another 3 months.

Thus, it is considered that as per the current status, the prospects of conducting the local elections will be only after February.
