This is really a fantastic piece of news. It is now said that the four- lane elevated link road project between Chennai Port and Maduravoyal for an amount of Rs 1530 crores would take off finally. A total length of 20.3km would be covered in the new alignment and it is clear that NHAI would submit the revised DPR or detailed project report by 10th of October. One important point is the project cross section has been upgraded from 20m to 29m and out of a total 7400m length area for clearance of slums in the project, a length of 3400m has been cleared now. The alignment at the land point of the port has been agreed by the Indian Navy as well as by CPT or Chennai Port Trust.

It is brought out that CPT would provide 50% of the cost of Rs 470 crores towards acquisition of land, relief and rehabilitation etc. The state government would be responsible for providing the remaining 50 percent of t cost and any additional cost would also be borne by the state government.

To enable the alignment of the elevated road pass through the existing naval quarters near Napier Bridge, the Naval- officers have agreed to exchange their residential quarters with CPT on the condition of provision of equal extent of land. In- principal approval has been given by the shipping ministry and that is approval to the proposal for alienation of CPT land to naval authorities in lieu of taking over the Navy land by Chennai Port.

It is worthy to note that Mr. Pon. Radhakrishnan, who is the union minister for state for finance and shipping, played his role in holding discussions with the officials concerned on the 4-lane elevated link road project from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal . The minister also urged the officials to expedite the project. Later he held discussions with the chief minister of TN, Mr. E.
