It is likely that Chennai will be facing a drinking water crisis. This is because all the private drinking water manufacturers and private water tankers have joined hands and going on a strike in Chennai city. This strike is to oppose restrictions towards extracting groundwater.

Since Monday, all the private water tankers have been on strike following the court order that restricts extracting groundwater in Chennai city. As per reports, since Tuesday, about 1500 water package units were kept shut, says the Greater Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturers Association. Out of these, 450 of them belong to Chennai city. It also adds that with the restriction imposed on extracting groundwater, about 3-4th of the total package units in Chennai will be affected. And this may cause surge in rates of drinking water in Chennai city.

Last week, the bore wells in Chennai were shut and all the private water tankers were blocked from obtaining water. These actions were taken by the revenue officials. This initiative was a follow up of the Madras Court order in this issue. If any illegal groundwater extraction is observed, immediate action shall be taken, says MC. The groundwater blocks are totally divided into four different categories and the over-exploited blocks are banned from taking water.

This initiative has left a lot of packaged drinking water manufactures in shocks, because most of the residents totally rely on bubbletop water cans to meet their daily drinking water needs. On Tuesday, in fact, a few hotels were found shut because of insufficient supply of water.

The Chennai Metro Water department had stated on Monday that for the essential purposes, water supply shall be provided to commercial complexes and apartments and companies alongside OMR. The officials are also instructed to take immediate measures to cope with the crisis situation.
