This is Navarathri time in India and people go to their native places to be with their family and friends are well known. It is now brought out that the private bus operators have increased the bus fares for the buses that go from Chennai city to other parts of Tamil Nadu. In a private air-conditioned sleeper bus from Chennai to Madurai the commuters paid double the ticket fares and amount of Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 on average was collected as the fare.

It must not be forgotten that minister for transport, Mr. Vijayabhaskar had warned the private bus operators not to increase the bus fares and inspite of the warning the private bus operators have hiked the ticket rates. Some private bus operators have hiked fares to 150 percent also.

A passenger travelling to Tirunelveli expressed his thoughts and spoke about how the ticket fares from Chennai to Tirunelveli was Rs 800 to Rs 900 usually and how it has increased to Rs 1800 or more also. He also added that the passengers were forced to pay huge amounts for the tickets as they do not have any other option. According to the private bus operators this hike in the bus fares are legal and it is not against the law.

A private bus operator spoke about how as per the Motor Vehicle Act 1989, the bus operators could collect any amount for dropping a passenger from one point to other point. He then added that nowhere there is a provision to collect the same amount throughout the year. It must be noted 2700 SETC buses are operated from Koyambedu to other parts of Chennai and 90 percent of the buses were filled by online booking this season. It is said that to handle extra rush of people 770 extra buses would be operated to places like Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore and Salem in the next four days.
