We might have come across dumpsters in Chennai city in 11 major bus routes like Kamarajar Salai, Anna Salai, Poonamallee High road, OMR, RK Salai, Sardar Patel Road etc. These dumpsters would not be there anymore. The latest news is GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has removed these dumpsters. Small dustbins have been provided in the crowded places like bus stops, junctions. The main objective of this is to keep Chennai city free from litter. With the help of these small dustbins both wet as well as dry waste could be disposed off separately.
According to the sources belonging to the health department, the move was to make Chennai city cleaner. It was also revealed that for the purpose of cleanliness conservancy staffs would be engaged along these stretches in additional shifts in the afternoon and this would be along with the morning and late night conservancy. An official spoke about how at the crowded places the floating population could use twin colour coded small dust bins. He also added that the dumpsters were overflowing with garbage and it was due to this reason these dumpsters were replaced by small dustbins. The good news is the bus route roads would have clean look as the cleaning staffs would be doing their work round the clock.
People passing through Anna Salai would be surprised to see blue green dustbins at the bus stops and junctions in Chennai city. In the recent times the civic body has received many complaints regarding the overflowing dumpsters is known. This project would be expanded to other roads in Chennai city if it goes well. This was confirmed by an official. There were complaints from many commuters and road users regarding littering. They spoke about how the littering has not come down as the dust bins were not used. They also highlighted about garbage getting accumulated at the bus stops and about the awareness that must be spread regarding the use of dustbins. A commuter at Simpsons was unhappy about people who were littering the bus stops despite the presence of two small dust bins.
