It is known that funds are important for any work to be carried out and the funds play a crucial role in the storm water drains also. There has been a delay in the sanction of the funds and it is now said that due to this delay the corporation of Chennai has just started the drain work now ahead of the monsoon season. It is important to note that the civic body officials are hopeful of completing the drain work before the arrival of monsoons but the residents feel that if the work doesn’t gets finished before the arrival of monsoons then it would go down the drain.
It was in the end of the month of August 2018 an amount of Rs 290 crores was sanctioned under the Chennai Mega City Development Mission Fund. This was confirmed by the officials belonging o the corporation of Chennai. An official spoke about how from the last July the corporation of Chennai was trying to mobilize the funds and how it took its own time. He later spoke about how by the end of September the tender process got finished and how the work was assigned to be carried out in 70 packages. The official finally explained how work on drains has begun along 170 of the sanctioned 335 roads and how the remaining roads would be taken up soon in the coming days.
As per the corporation, utmost care would be taken so that no hazard or inconvenience would be caused for the road users. The residents were not happy about this work and they were of the opinion that digging along the roads before monsoon would create many issues as the work would not be completed. A resident belonging to Teynampet expressed his concern and spoke about how the drain work was carried out in an unprofessional way. He spoke about how anyone could slip and fall into the ditch with mud around it. He threw light on the fact that rains would worsen the issue as it could lead to more slush. The resident later added that professional contractors should have been involved so that the drain work would be done quickly and safely.
To minimize the inconvenience to those using the roads, the contractors have been asked to use safety precautions and barricades around the area. Shops and houses would be provided with ramps for accessing. This was later confirmed by an official.
