Theyagaraya Road is one of the busiest hubs of Chennai in terms of commercial centers and residence as well. Greater Chennai Corporation plants fully grown saplings for 1.5 km stretch of Theyagaraya Road making it a complete green drive.
Volunteers analyzed the road completely affirming the type of tree sapling that goes well with the locality. Age, species and health conditions of the existing trees are accounted into the analysis. The report was submitted on Friday said one of officials of Chennai Corporation. More than 50 saplings will be planted alongside the roads with cutting down of six trees declared to be dead by the tree experts.
Expert opinion suggested that the marked six tress of rain trees imposing a danger to the commuters and pedestrians. After several consultation the trees are planned to chop down said the corporation official. Controversial feedbacks has been raised regarding the cutting down of old trees on the road that lived for years.
The act of cutting down old tress and planting saplings along the entire pedestrian plaza with play area, benches and pedestrian friendly pathways falls into the smart city mission project with an estimated budget of Rs 33.80 Crore. In order to avoid constant dug up for various department cables the ducting process is being done on this pedestrian plaza. Separate tracts are laid up for optical fiber cables, power lines, and Sewage line and water pipelines. Trees are selected in a way to replace the chopped down trees comprising maximum 10 years old saplings that can provide shelter and shade for the shoppers and pedestrians. The green project can form a hub for bio diversity based locality attracting specific birds and other organisms. Food joints and restaurants will be placed with equal intervals for benches and trees in various locations. The laying of the pedestrian plaza along with plantings of the saplings will take place simultaneously.
