Changes in the alignment of Metro line Phase II

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans a partial elevated stretch of metro lines and another portion as an underground stretch connecting Light House to Poonamalle for Phase II project. Earlier it was completely planned to be the underground stretch for complete rail lines from Light House to CMBT. After the announcement of Tamil Nadu government’s plan to extend the metro connectivity all the way to Poonamalle the officials changed the plan. With few minor alignment it is decided now to have both elevated and underground lines for the mentioned stretch of metro project.

The stretch from Light House will not touch CMBT as it is now diverted to Poonamalle via Valasaravakkam. The line will have underground connection from Light house to Meenakshi college stations then followed by the line to Poonamalle on elevated platform.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited plan to make two viaducts at Vadapalani as a first level flyover at the junction of Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and for Metro’s Phase I line from Koyambedu to Alandur via Vadapalani. Sources from CMRL mentioned the application of clearance from the concerned departments for creating viaducts. Once the permission is cleared the work will be started immediately added the CMRL source.

Chennai metro decided to lay down the rest of the corridor in elevated path as the road width is available for the construction. Detailed project reports (DPR) for the metro line between Light House to Poonamalle is already submitted. Another A detailed design consultant (DDC) will start the work in the stretch between Meenakshi college and Light House. The analysis of land and other requirement on the locality will be finalized with this report and consultancy. The appointed DDC will start the work immediately after the reports are completely verified and theoretically tested from the experts.

The stretch covers a distance of 12 Km that includes the stations of Light House, Forehore Estate Road, Kutchery Road, Thirumayilai, Alwarpet, Bhararthidasan Road, Adyar Gate Junction, Nandanam (interchange with Line 1), Natesan Park, Panagal Park, Kodambakkam Metro and Meenakshi College.

After receiving the applied funds from Asian Development Bank Chennai Metro will start the work. Bank officials are discussing with Metro officials about the sanction of the funds.
