Government Buses are one of the important modes of transport for the people in the state of Tamil Nadu and many people travel in these buses. Hence it is necessary for the government buses to provide latest information about bus stops etc for the commuters. It is now revealed that as many as 30 government buses belonging to the TN state were fitted with GPS or Global Positioning System based PIS or Public Information System. The speakers fitted in these 30 government buses would play an important role in announcing the bus stops for the passengers now. This would be similar to the speakers installed in the local trains. It must be taken into account that in the pilot phase of the project 30 government buses operated by TNSTC or Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Madurai were fitted with this GPS.

The bus routes 77B (Mattuthavani to Arapalayam) and 48Y (Mattuthavani to Thirumangalam) are very popular and many people travel in these bus routes of TNSTC buses is well known. Now the buses plying along these two important routes have been fitted with GPS. There are also other government buses fitted with PIS connect and these buses connect tourist places like Meenakshi Amman temple and Alagar Koil with many switch over points in Madurai city.

It is well known that Madurai city is a popular tourist and religious place and many tourists and devotees visit this city every day. These visitors would not know the city bus routes and these visitors find lots of difficulties in reaching their places of destination in Madurai city. They seek the help of other commuters to identify the bus stops. It is important to note that TNSTC Madurai had joined hands with a private firm Silicon Harvest fitted automated bus stops identification systems with speakers in 30 different government buses now. This would ease out the difficulties of the commuters who are new to Madurai city.

An important person belonging to Silicon Harvest firm expressed his thoughts and spoke about how they developed GPS based system to identify the bus stops along with the pre-recorded voice announcing the bus stops. He later spoke about how the bus route is mapped into an array of latitude and longitude geo-coordinates. The speaker would play the pre-recorded voice segment whenever the mapped location arrived.  He pointed out that the passengers would be benefited hugely by getting ready easily as the announcement would be made in Tamil language atleast 100m before the bus stop. The sensational piece of information is entire the unit cost Rs 25000 and this Silicon Harvest firm had agreed to install it free of cost in the buses. It is revealed that the firm has now got rights to broadcast the advertisements through this system.
