As there is a system of providing the 1st 100 units of electricity consumption free adopted by TANGEDCO, it is hesitating to offer the exemption of paying the electricity bill for the residents of the cyclone-affected districts including Thanjavur and Pudhukkottai.

The system of offering the 1st 100 units of electricity consumption has been in practice throughout Tamil Nadu. The state government of Tamil Nadu bears this cost for TANGEDCO.

Recently, several districts including Nagapattinam, Pudhukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Theni, and Dindigul have all been severely affected by the cyclone Gaja. So, the residents in these areas suffering fully losing their lifeline essentials.

Subsequently, TANGEDCO extended the date for payment of electricity bills up to 30th November without any penalty.

However, several political parties have been insisting that these residents must be exempted from paying the last electricity bill.

An official from TANGEDCO shared in this regard that ‘around 50 Lakhs electricity connections including agricultural come under the domain of the village Panchayat, city Panchayat and city administrations, Out of this, the consumption of electricity in these houses, more than 50% of the houses have consumed less than 100units combined for 2 months is less than 100units only! Thus, they communed the ‘no-payment’ domain.

Further, most of the free electricity connections given free agricultural connections come under these delta districts.

However, as TANGEDCO is already in serious financial problems, only an extension can be given for paying the bill but the exemption is out of the question.

Only the state government of Tamil Nadu can take a decision on this.’
