In case a policeman stops you and demands you to show your driving license, you can very well show him either the physical or electronic format of the same, as a new notice from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways allows it. The Ministry has recently rolled out a circular to the state government where it notifies about the amendment of Rule 139 pertaining to Central Motor Vehicles Rule, 1989. Accordingly, the electronic document of driving license, fitness and permit, insurance, registration and all others are acceptable.

This is an effort to facilitate the citizens and let them make use of the digital platforms to carry the documents on the go. Following this, the ministry has requested all the DGP and Transport Commissioner and principal secretaries to abide by the Rule 139 and make officers aware of the changes so as to avoid any harassment or inconvenience caused to the citizens.

With the help of Digilocker, a mobile app, citizens can easily carry their driving license and other registration documents with absolute ease. For this, they will have to sign in or log into the application with an OTP verification procedure.

Instead of the laminated cards that are being used at present, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is eyeing on to set up new kind of driving license. These will be made out of polycarbonate cards. They are to contain high security QR code. There will be a central database to store details of the commuter and his vehicle which can be used by the police officials with the help of QR code.
