The commuters belonging to places like Tiruvottiyur etc could travel to Chennai city and reach Chennai Central through metro. They could then change for buses or suburban trains or MRTS trains etc. This could soon become a reality.
The phase-1 of Chennai metro rail work is going to be completed soon. It is now brought out that 9 km phase-1 extension work that connects Washermanpet with Wimco Nagar would be the next work that would be carried out. The important piece of information is the track work contract was given to Apurvakriti Infrastructure Private Limited. This was confirmed by the officials of CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. The initial groundwork has been started by the contractor. The next step would be the track laying and it would begin in next few weeks. The work would take a year to complete and the amount of Rs 60 crores would be spent on it. This was confirmed by the official of CMRL.
It was in the year 2010 that the Rs 3010 crore extension was planned when the state government gave approval for the project. Just 2 years back only the center gave its approval is known. This extension work would be highly beneficial for those commuters living in the northern part of Chennai with as many as 9 stations at Washermanpet, Korukkupet, Sir Theagaraya College, Tondiarpet, Toll Gate, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar. The trains would run underground from Washermanpet to Korukkupet and after that it would be an elevated corridor.
In the month of April in 2017, the construction of tunnel between Washermanpet and Korukkupet was completed. The construction of stations along the stretch has been in the progress. It must be taken into account that viaduct for elevated stretch was also started. By early 2020 the project would be completed and this was confirmed by the officials.
