Till now the state government extended the services for teachers whose tenure ended during the academic year but this would not be there anymore. It is now revealed that the state government has done away with this extension. It must be noted that currently teachers whose retirement dates fall after June (beginning of an academic year) are given extension till the end of the academic year that is March-April. This extension has been creating financial burden in terms of monthly salaries and this was confirmed by the school education department. There is surplus teaching strength present in many government schools in TN is known. As per a government order it is now clear that there would not be any re-employment of teachers after their retirement age of 58.

It all started in the year 1959 when there was a shortage of teachers and the government found difficult to find suitable replacements in the middle of an academic year. This had huge impact on the academic performance of many students. For this reason the retired teachers were allowed to serve till the end of the academic year. The data has confirmed that on an average 2500 teachers retire each year and 500 of them get extensions till the end of the academic year. Presently TN has got 15000 surplus teachers and it is now brought out that with as many as 2.3 lakh teachers, the teacher student ratio is around 1:25. The surprising piece of information is this ratio is above the national average despite the lack of subject teachers and existence of single teacher schools.

State school education secretary, Mr. Pradeep Yadav, issued orders and according to the order the re-employment of retired teachers was an additional financial burden and doing away with that would not impact the students. The order also clarified about the non-allotment of classes for most of the teachers. The order further stated that the teachers were promoted to carry out administrative work in the district level educational offices. Important point is the GO exempted schools that did not have surplus teachers. It must be noted that some teachers go on unauthorised leave and the government would take action against these teachers. A circular was sent to the schools and as per the circular it is clear that the district and chief educational officers have been instructed to take strict action against such absentees. Failing to take action against the absentees could lead to disciplinary actions against them.
