If the Union Ministry gives its approval then in the state of TN atleast 393 PG diploma seats in fields like gynaecology, dermatology and orthopaedics could be converted to degree courses. This is for the academic year 2019-20. It is known that for the conversion of all diploma courses in 14 specialities across the 6 state run medical colleges health secretary Mr. J. Radhakrishnan had written to the centre. The point to be noted here is the MCI or Medical Council of India had asked all the medical colleges to surrender the diploma seats for conversion to degree seats.
In the month of July in the year 2018 centre made huge noises when it issued notices seeking applications along with the undertaking from medical colleges for increasing post graduate degree seats. For the conversion of 214 diploma seats in MMC, 52 seats in SMC, 14 in KMC, 79 in Madurai medical college, 23 in Thanjavur medical college and 11 in Coimbatore medical college in the academic year 2019-20,Tamil Nadu had sent applications to union health secretary on 25th January is known.
According to the health secretary, Mr. Radhakrishnan, the main aim was to double the number of post graduate seats in the upcoming 2 to 3 years. He then added that the upcoming multi-speciality hospitals in Madurai would fetch more post graduate seats. The information collected was in this year TN was allowed to add as many as 56 post graduate degrees in 8 medical colleges and the total number of seats in 2019 is atleast 1306. In another week of time, DME or Directorate of Medical Education is expecting atleast 100 more seats so that the total number of seats would be atleast 1800.
In the month of March, the first round of counselling for All India quota would begin and it is now said that MCI would announce the number of seats that are approved. By the year 2020, all the medical colleges with atleast one batch of MBBS students would start PG and this has been announced by the state. The important piece of information is by May month 2019, state of TN expects atleast 240 more seats in the super speciality courses.
