Rs 50 crores MHRD grant for University of Madras

Established in the year 1857, University of Madras or Madras University has been one of the oldest educational institutions in India. It is well known that 6 campuses of Madras University are present in Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal and Chetpet. This University of Madras is making huge noises now. For upgrading its research facilities, University of Madras has got an amount of Rs 50 crores from the Ministry of Human Resource Development or MHRD.

The information gathered was this University of Madras was among 150 universities and colleges that were selected for the project in India. It is revealed that a total of 10 universities belonging to category 1 would receive Rs 100 crores and as many as 17 universities falling under category 2 would get fund amount of Rs 50 crores.

Mr. P. Duraiswamy who is the vice-chancellor of Madras University expressed his views. He said that the grant amount was given for the research, innovation and quality improvement. This was under the phase-2 of Rastriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan. He later spoke about how Rs 15 crores would be used in improving the job opportunities for the students and for the development of entrepreneurship. He highlighted that the remaining Rs 35 crores would be used for innovative research and collaboration with top foreign university.

It has been pointed out that the MHRD had identified 15 top universities such as Harvard University, MIT, UC Berkeley. The vice-chancellor finally spoke about how in due course one or two universities would be identified depending on the research strength and collaborate.
