The news that Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has started installing vertical gardens along the pillars of G. N. Chetty Road flyover has been the subject of discussion for many now. The main objective behind this was to stop defacing of bridge pillars and to increase the green space.

It is revealed that eight out of twenty pillars would be covered with vertical gardens of green and red leafed plants. An amount of Rs 36.1 lakhs would be spent for this purpose of vertical gardens and the contractor must maintain the vertical gardens for a period of 3 months. This was according to the tender clauses. The point to be noted here is this effort of vertical gardens along the pillar would be based on the similar projects on the Bengaluru and Nagpur because in these cities the metro rail pillars have vertical gardens.

To hold the vertical gardens frame, a metal frame has been fixed along the pillars of G. N. Chetty Road flyover and it is now said that the corporation of Chennai has began installing pots of plants in it. As per an official belonging to GCC, all eight pillars would be covered with vertical gardens.

It is known that the growth of plants might create issues to the flyover and might even damage it. To prevent this from taking place the metal frame is used along the pillars of the flyover in T. Nagar. It must be noted that the frames and gardens could be dismantled if it was required. The official spoke about the project cost that included the work needed to build the storage tanks plus bore well, sumps, pump room, water and power equipment etc.

For maintaining the gardens, corporation would seek sponsors and CSR funds. It is now brought out that maintenance not only involves watering the plants but also protecting the plants from cattle etc. After seeing the complete installation, the sponsors would get involved. The information gathered was GCC would study the feasibility of the installations at T. Nagar and later decide about extending the vertical gardens project to other flyovers in the Chennai city.
