Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has been doing many things for the sake of the people belonging to Chennai. The superb piece of news that has come out now is GCC would soon launch 250 cycles with 25 parking stations under the cycle sharing system in Chennai city.
In this situation there are two important factors that must be considered. The factors are lack of exclusive cycle lanes that would make riding cycle highly risky option and the opposition from the residents to set up cycle parking stations on the present footpaths in Anna Nagar. It is said that these roadblocks must be cleared before GCC launches this superb cycle sharing system. This idea by GCC to introduce cycle sharing system in Chennai has been appreciated by many cyclists.
The cyclists were of the opinion that the lack of infrastructure and safety concerns would prevent them from using the cycles in the peak hours of time. As per a regular cyclist it is clear that driving cycles during the peak hours would be tough. The cyclist also pointed out about the last mile connectivity and said it was very difficult to use the cycles unless exclusive cycle lanes were laid.
Finally the cyclist spoke about how the motorists honk and lack the traffic sense. Few urban experts expressed their unhappiness about this cycle sharing system and said it might not be successful unless adequate steps like drawing cycle lines, putting up barricades and preventing encroachment of lanes were adopted.
An urban planner was of the view that the corporation of Chennai must be serious if it wanted the cycle sharing system to be successful in the Chennai city. Vice-president of projects, Smartbike Mobility, Mr. Abhinandan Malhotra expressed his thoughts and spoke about how Chennai city had better infrastructure than other cities like Hyderabad, New Delhi and Amravati. It is known that in the above mentioned cities this cycle sharing system is doing well. He then threw light on the narrow roads in Chennai and how these narrow roads would be a problem. Mr. Govind Rao, deputy commissioner, works, spoke about how his team has been coordinating with the traffic police wing of the city police.
