The commercial hub Pondy Bazaar in Chennai is now making news. It is brought out that on Monday, 18th February Chennai Smart City Limited had approved the proposal for redevelopment and redesigning of feeder roads to the highly congested Pondy Bazaar in Chennai. By this additional parking space in the commercial hub would be possible. According to an official, a total of 2200 parking spaces are likely to be earmarked along the feeder roads to Pondy Bazaar and other stretches in T. Nagar. In the month of March the work would start.
It is worthy to note that the proposal for smart improvement of 14 feeder roads to Pondy Bazaar is estimated to cost an amount of Rs 5.34 crores. Next month Chennai Corporation would complete the pedestrian plaza work along the Theyagaraya Road. It was pointed out by an official that during the construction motorists and shop owners have complained about difficulties in parking vehicles on Theyagaraya Road.
The information collected is the Association of Pondy Bazaar Shop Owner`s has made a representation for parking arrangements for customers. A survey was conducted and parking spaces were identified along the length of 2.47km of roads in T. Nagar area.
It is now said that the civic body would develop kerbs for realigning the carriageway, widen the footpaths present on the feeder road plus set apart spaces for 120 cars and 240 motorcycles, mark zebra crossings and use traffic calming measures for the safety of the pedestrians on all the streets.
As per an official it is clear that all spaces including footpaths, refuge islands and pedestrian crossings would be accessible to all the users regardless of their age, gender and physical ability. The important information collected is a total of 377 m on the Raja Badar Street, 220 m of Deena Dayulu Street, 155 m of Lakshmikanthan Street, 89 m of Basudeva Street, 212 m of Raja Street, 180 m of Masilamani Street, 370 m of Gopala Krishnan Road, 190 m of Sivagnanam Street, 135 m of Singaravelu Street have been identified for the above project. There would also be smart street redevelopment in North Usman Road and Chennai Smart City has given its approval.
