The Vatican has decided on the next Pope. He will be Pope Francis from Argentina. Pope Francis takes over from Pope Benedict who will retire soon.
Christened Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Pope elect is an Argentinean. He is the first to be selected from the Jesuit Order. He will also be the first non-European Pope in over 1,200 years. Bergoglio is a theological conservative and subscribes to the Vatican ideals on gay marriage, abortion, ordination of women and other issues. However, he seems to have a common touch. He is a soccer fan, like all South Americans, and his favourite team is the San Lorenzo squad. He prefers to take public transport, cooks his own meals and lives in a small apartment.
Speaking to the media on the event, founder of liberation theology in Brazil Leonardo Boff said, ‘I am encouraged by this choice, viewing it as a pledge for a church of simplicity and of ecological ideals. What is more, Bergoglio comes from the developing world, outside the walls of Rome.’
