High tension is prevailing in the coastal town of Rameswaram as a large number of Indian fishermen have been reported to have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy early Thursday morning. The incident is close at the heels of many such similar ones, the most recent being the arrest of 19 fishermen on Wednesday.

Eye witnesses say that the Lankan Navy boats came well within Indian Territory and attacked the fishermen (expected to be around 55 in number) brutally. They were attacked with iron roads and the butts of guns. The Navy personnel threw back kilograms of fish caught by the fishermen into the sea and destroyed their GPRS devices.

The State Fishery officials are awaiting formal communication from Sri Lanka about the incident.
