Many vehicles travel along OMR or Old Mahabalipuram Road these days and this OMR is an important place in Chennai is known. The motorists have been finding it tough due to the defunct or non functioning signals present on the 2 busy stretches on this OMR.
It has been 8 years since the traffic signals were installed in front of Sathyabhama College and near Perumal temple. It was pointed out by some residents of this area that these signals were not functioning properly and have been on the blink in the last 8 years.
A resident expressed his unhappiness regarding the defunct traffic signals and spoke about how the signals in front of Sathyabhama College and at the junction near perumal temple in Semmancheri were not working. He further explained about the U turn present at the perumal koil junction. The point is all the vehicles coming from Semmenchery converge at this junction. He finally shed light on the difficulty involved in reaching the opposite side of the road. Safety of the pedestrians is very important and this was also confirmed by him.
The important information is when the road was laid decade back the traffic was less and non functioning traffic signals did not create any issue for the public. Now heavy traffic and reckless driving has been creating issues and the need for the traffic signals to function is more. It was pointed out by another resident belonging to Semmencheri that the traffic signal present outside Sathyabhama College does not work and it must be replaced.
It is said that neither the city traffic police nor TNRDC or Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation took interests to solve this issue of defunct traffic signals on the busy stretches. As per a senior official with the traffic (South), the issue must be brought under the notice of TNRDC as they are responsible for maintaining of roads and signals. It was pointed out by an official belonging to IT Expressway that maintenance of the traffic signals is supervised by a separate wing. The official did not explain about how and when the maintenance was done.
