There were many complaints regarding the lack of mobile connectivity and inability to get important data on mobile phones in the underground metro stations in Chennai. This lack of mobile connectivity would not be there in the near future. To make up for the loss of mobile connectivity, all underground metro stations belonging to CMRL would have telephone booths soon. On the platforms of the underground metro stations would be installed the telephone booths and the calls would be free or of low cost. This was later confirmed by some officials of CMRL.

It was revealed by an official that in a few weeks of time, landline facility would be installed and the department has been in communication with some companies for this purpose. He then added that the passengers at the times of emergencies could walk up the metro station controller’s room to make a call. This could be done till the phone booths get installed.

Informing the passengers is very important and it is now said that CMRL would make announcement in all the trains and in the metro stations to inform about this facility of telephone booths. It is well known that Chennai metro rail is spread over of 45 km of Chennai city and 24 km are underground stretches.

One important point to be noted here is currently Airtel and Jio customers get mobile connectivity in limited stretch between Thirumangalam and Egmore stations. As per some officials it is clear that it might take some time so that mobile connectivity is got in all the underground stretches. The reason for providing landline connections in the underground metro stations was to ensure safety for the women commuters. It must not be forgotten that previously there were some complaints about the lack of safety for women commuters at the underground metro stations due to the lack of mobile connectivity.

According to a senior official of CMRL, travelling through metro train was safe and thorough monitoring has been carried out for the safety. He hinted about the presence of 52 to 100 cameras in all the metro stations and added that the metro trains also have CCTV cameras.
