In the phase-2 of Chennai Metro Rail project, there are going to be 210 coaches. These trains will be of 3 or 6 coaches running for about 52 km length.
The overall estimated cost of the Chennai Metro Rail project is Rs 69,180. This shall include 126 stations covering a total distance of 119 km. To begin with, 52 km of the construction will be done.
Chennai Metro Rail officials state that in the initial phase of the work, Madhavaram to CMBT will be covered followed by Madhavaram to SIPCOT. A total of 210 coaches will be required to fully operate the stretch.
The officials further add that the total number of train count cannot be said now, as there are both 3-coach trains and 6-coach trains available for now. Initially, we will require 210 coaches, but in the near future, we would say as to how many trains will be needed.
No special coaches
There is also not going to be any special class coaches in the second phase of metro rail project. Of all the coaches, there will be ladies compartment in the train, they add. Decision as to separate the coaches is still getting contemplated. One half may be for ladies and others may be for special class, and the remaining may be general compartments – the final call is awaited still.
The second phase of metro project is set to be based on Japanese technology and built in India. The compartment will probably be split as special class and ladies coach, says an official.
For the phase-2 of the project, there will be a combination of Japanese firm and Indian firm. Upon completing tender processes, contract will be rolled out and then the two firms would come together for working out the project.
To note, the 4-coach trains of phase-1 project of Chennai Metro Rail were from the manufacturers: Alstom, a French firm where 45 such trains were bought.
