B.S. Gnanadesikan, President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) came out in support of the Union Government with regards to the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. Reacting to criticism from all quarters on New Delhi’s inaction in the matter, Mr. Gnanadesikan said that imposing economic sanctions on Sri Lanka would have a negative impact on the plight of the Tamils there. He said that India currently supplies seeds and tractors and has built houses and hospitals for those affected by the war. All that will stop if sanctions are imposed, he said. On the issue of creating a separate Tamil Eelam, Mr. Gnanadesikan said that India could not decide things for a sovereign country.

Speaking to the media, he said, ‘Are those demanding economic sanctions feel such action should be taken even if it hits these welfare measures?... Our actions in no way should affect the Sri Lankan Tamils adversely. The student community must realise the factual position and give up agitation. I believe India will vote for the US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka and this is the position of the TNCC also. When India helps Sri Lankan Tamils to secure their rights, the Sri Lankan Tamils will praise us.’
