The latest college to join the fast against Sri Lanka’s war atrocities is the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. 69 students of IIT(M) started the day-long fast under a shamiana on Sunday. Students have assured the college management that classes will not be disrupted on Monday.

Students of the usually politically inactive institution say that the fast is not about Tamils or Sri Lankans but to create political awareness among the student population. According to one student, ‘At least 40 of the fasting students are from north India. We are fasting to say that this is not a Sri Lankan or a Tamil issue alone. Posters, explaining the history of conflict in seven different languages, dotted the campus. We even have a poster in Tulu as many of us come from there. Our point was to highlight the issue and spread awareness to as many people as possible.
