SL government asks for protection of citizens

The Sri Lankan Government has formally lodged a request with its Indian counterpart to protect Sri Lankan people and property in the country, especially in Tamil Nadu. The request comes in the wake of two attacks on a monk and pilgrims of Lankan origin. A monk on a study tour to Thanjavur was attacked at the town’s Brihadeeswarar Temple. Another incident saw people attack a monk and a group of pilgrims and Chennai Central Station.

Close ally of Sri Lankan President Champika Ranawaka has said that the government must take these attacks safely. He also said that people of Tamil Nadu must be banned from travelling to Sri Lanka and vice versa. ‘We may have to take this step if the Tamil Nadu leaders continued to act foolishly so as to allow attacks against our citizens’, he said.
