The Railway administration has consented to introduce a new weekly express train from Tambaram to Tirunelveli in order to counter the large passenger demand and the related shortage of seats/trains.

In order to cater to the travelling needs of the citizens of the southern districts, presently a weekly express train from Chennai to Nagercoil, and a daily express train from Tambaram to Kollam (Kerala). Apart from this, daily express trains operated from Chennai to Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. Still, there is a heavy rush for passengers in the trains from Chennai-Tirunelveli.

With the passengers increasing evry day, in order to meet this additional demand, it is planned to operate a new weekly express train from Tambaram to Tirunelveli. The machinery/equipment department of the Southern Railways has approved this.

With this introduction of a new weekly express, it is expected that the rush/demand, especially during the weekend in the Chennai-Tirunelveli route, will come down!

This new weekly train will start on Sundays at 6.00 PM and will reach Tambaram at 8.20 AM the next day. On the return trip, This train will start from Tambaram on Mondays at 5.00 PM and reach Tirunelveli at 8.30 AM.

A Railway official informed that this new train is set to be introduced after the elections.

In the Suvidha train, the fare from Tirunelveli to Chennai by 3rd class air-conditioned section is around Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000. As the passengers need to bear this additional expense, the introduction of the proposed weekly express will ease the fare problem faced by the passengers.

1500 special rains have been operated by the Chennai Division over the last 3 years. It is worth noting that the revenues have gone up by 10% because of this.
