After much diplomatic tension, Italy has decided to send back two of its marines to face trial for murder in India. They have taken the decision after receiving assurance from the Indian government that the two will be protected as per their fundamental rights.
An official statement from the Indian Government said, ‘The Italian government requested and received written assurances from the Indian authorities regarding the treatment of the marines and the protection of their fundamental rights.’ And a statement released by the Italian authorities said, ‘In light of the assurances received, the government has considered the opportunity, in the interests of Fusiliers Marina, to maintain the commitment made at the permission to participate in the vote back in India by March 22. The marines agreed to this decision.’
The marines were arrested for killing two fishermen off the coast of Kerala. They were, however, allowed to go home in December for a month but did not return.
