1. This is the first occasion in a long time that there are no towering personalities in the election – such as Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa.
2. Instead of Karunanidhi, his son M K Stalin is now the DMK Party president to lead the election campaign. Similarly, in the pace of Jayalalithaa, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E. Palanisamy and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselam are the leaders in AIADMK.
3. Irrespective of the many political parties in the election fray in Tamil Nadu, only 2 alliances are prominent – DMK-Congress and the AIADMK-BJP.
4. However, 2 new personalities who can play spoil-sports are there in the fray – TTV Dinakaran, a nephew of V K Sasikala (Jayalalithaa’s close friend) and the other is Kamalahasan, founder of Makkal Needhi Maiyam (MNM) who has fielded candidates.
5. Apart from the parliamentary elections for 49 seat, the by-polls for 19 legislative assemblies are also to be conducted in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on 18th April and4 more assembly seats on 29th May. It may be noted that AIADMK needs to win at least 4 seats from these polls to have a majority in the assembly.
6. The public may recall that Jayalalithaa had announced that AIADMK would contest alone in 2014, presently AIADMK gas tied up with BJP, PMK, and DMDK!
7. DMK has formed SPA – secular Progressive Alliance with 9 parties including Congress and contests in 20 parliamentary seats where Congress contests in 10 seats.
8. Though the 2 major parties, DMK and AiaDMK are contesting in 20 seats each, there is a direct contest between the 2 only in 8 constituencies.
9. Kamalahasan’s MNM and TTV Dinakaran`s AMMK have put up candidates for all the 39 parliamentary seat ad the assembly by-polls as well. They are expected to cause some vote-dents.
10. Meanwhile, both Congress and BJP keep hoping that their alliance will help some room to manoeuvre if there is a chance for a coalition.
