There are many hostels for women in the city of Chennai. The latest news is out of these several hostels only 7 women hostels have been registered with the district collectorate till now. Only after model code of conduct or MCC for LS elections gets completed, then action against the unregistered women hostels in Chennai would be taken. This was as per the district collector.
It was pointed out by the Chennai district collector Mr. A. Shanmuga Sundaram that as many as 1046 applications have been issued seeking registration of women hostels. He spoke about how 7 licenses have been issued and how 48 women hostels were given provisional licenses. It must be noted that the remaining women hostels are under scrutiny. He finally threw light on how raid would be conducted and strict action would be taken on those hostels operating without even applying after counting of votes and after MCC gets completed.
It must not be forgotten that in the month of December in 2018 a 48 year old owner of women hostel was arrested after 9 hidden cameras were found in the bathrooms and in other places in the working women’s hostel at Adambakkam in Chennai. This issue made huge noise is well known.
In various parts of Chennai city, about 2000 women’s hostels could be functioning and this was according to an unofficial estimate. To carry out the survey to enumerate the number of women’s hostels in Chennai city, the social welfare department in the month of October in 2018 directed the district collector, GCC officials and police. The important point is the survey is yet to take off.
It should be taken into account that The TN Hostels & Homes for Women & Children (Regulation) Rules 2015 mandates registration of all children and women’s hostels with social welfare department operating under respective district administrations. MCC does not prevent initiating action against hostels that are functioning illegally and this was according to an enquiry with the social welfare department.
As per a senior official belonging to the social welfare department it is clear that Chennai collectorate requires assistance from the civic body and police for carrying out raids on the women’s hostels. He highlighted that police would be busy in the election duty and the district administration would show its total power duty once after MCC gets completed.
The information collected is no survey to enumerate the number of women’s hostels in Chennai was done. This was confirmed by Mr. Shanmuga Sundaram.
