In a move to reach more number of people, the Indian Meteorological Department will now send an SMS to announce rain storms to those who wish to receive them.
The announcements made by the Department during the recent storm Neelam helped save lives and property, and further warnings will benefit the population. By receiving the SMSes, especially during the monsoon, citizens will be able to make decisions on steeping outside their homes, travelling out of town or sending their children to school.
The Department will open a website called India Weather soon for the purpose and will go live in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata from July this year. The price (or otherwise) of the service will be decided after consultations within the Department.
