M. K. Alagiri will not attend the DMK party meet to decide strategies post their withdrawal from the Centre, which is to be held in Chennai on Monday. Many see this as a protest against not being consulted in the decision to withdraw from the UPA.
The DMK withdrew support from the ruling UPA following differences with the Congress in the Sri Lankan issue. Four out of its five ministers in the Cabinet submitted their resignations together. Only Mr. Alagiri gave it in separately. Sources say that he was not consulted about the issue and he heard the news on the television.
The DMK is headed by the 88 year old M. Karunanidhi who indicated that his heir would be his younger son M.K. Stalin who is Mr. Alagiri’s brother. Tension has built up between the brothers since then.
