The Saudi Arabian Communications and Information Technology Commission has requested companies in the kingdom to meet the regulatory restrictions while using smart phone platforms like WhatsApp and Skype to avoid suspension and other dire consequences.
The country had banned the use of Black Berry smartphones in 2010 citing that messages to and from the device were encrypted and therefore could not be monitored. They claimed that this hindered their efforts to check crime and terrorism.
However, the move for WhatsApp and Skype is for ‘regulatory purposes’, say Saudi authorities. They have denied commercial motivations.
