Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ajit Singh announced on Tuesday that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will float a global tender for operations of the airports. The collaboration will be a joint venture where the chosen company takes care of the operations while AAI remains the owner.
Officials say that it is a working model for airports around the world. The reason for this move seems to be the inefficiency of the AAI staff in handling the terminals that are newly built and have technology-intense operations. The chosen company will be in charge of personnel, managing flight information, passenger flow, overseeing check in counters and boarding gates, baggage handling and housekeeping.
The operators of airports in Singapore, Kuala Lampur, Frankfurt and Zurich have expressed interest in the project.
