Temporary pipelines, farmers take away water for Poondi

Posted on: 28/Mar/2013 11:06:34 AM
The amount of water in the Poondi reservoir decreases steadily as the Krishna water that feeds it is being used up by farmers from Andhra Pradesh. The reservoir supplies drinking water to Chennai city. It receives only 100 cubic feet of water where 500 cubic feet is released by the Andhra Government. Police patrols have started along the canal that brings the water to check illegal extraction.

The breach of water from the canal is also due to the badly maintained temporary pipeline. Andhra Pradesh will suspend the release of Krishna water till this pipeline is renovated and repaired. Officials feel the move will save water considerably.
