On 3rd June 2019, all state board schools re-opened in the state of Tamil Nadu inspite of the extreme heat conditions. It is now said that the students studying classes like 3, 4, 5 and 8 are yet to receive the textbooks. It must not be forgotten that these are the classes for which the syllabus was revised this year.
The teachers have mentioned that the English medium textbooks for class 12 have been distributed in advance to the students but Tamil medium textbooks are not yet received by the majority of the government schools. Based on the revised syllabus for class 8 this year, the TN Textbooks and Educational Services Corporation is printing and distributing new textbooks is known.
The important point to be noted here is initially even for classes such as 2,7,10 and 12 the revision of textbooks was planned but at the last moment it was decided by the school education department that the textbooks for classes such as 2,4,5 and 8 would also be revised for academic year for 2019-20 academic year.
There were few complaints from the teachers regarding not receiving textbooks as on Tuesday. Some Coimbatore based teachers belonging to government as well as government aided schools spoke about how the science and social science textbooks for English or Tamil medium had come. It must be noted that the class 12 Tamil medium textbooks also have not reached many schools in Coimbatore. Except for class 8, the education department was able to distribute textbooks in Madurai district.
As per M.K.C. Subhashini, chief education officer, books for classes 3 and 4 could not be distributed but textbooks for other classes have been distributed. She then spoke about how her department mentioned about the printing of textbooks have completed and the books would be distributed in a day or in 2 days of time. It was later pointed out by the headmaster of a government school in Manapparai in Trichy district that school received textbooks for Tamil and English only.
The information gathered is in this year the textbook corporation has printed 4.72 crores textbooks and it included 3 crores textbooks for those studying in the government and government aided schools in TN.
According to an official belonging to the textbook corporation it is clear that only by the second week of the month of May, the CDs of revised textbooks for classes 3, 4, 5 and 8 was received. He was unhappy that the printing of the textbooks could not be completed on time inspite of huge efforts. He later assured that the textbooks would be distributed to the students within a week of time. One important piece of information is the textbook corporation is printing 44 lakhs books for the above mentioned classes.
