Cut-off marks for medical admissions to increase this time

In the state of Tamil Nadu, many students have performed exceedingly well in the NEET or National Entrance Cum Eligibility Test now is well known. The latest news is as more number of students has scored more marks in NEET, the cut-off marks for a medical college seat is likely to increase by more than 60 points. In the year 2018, the cut-off mark for open category was 424 and for ST it was 199.
In the year 2018, just 81 students scored above 550 marks in the NEET whereas in 2019 as many as 1329 students have got above 550 marks. This was as per National Testing Agency data. As many as 1647 students have scored between 451 and 500. It should be taken into account that the state of TN had added atleast 350 more MBBS seats in the government medical colleges. It is revealed that the number of open category seats in the state quota is around 855.
As per a senior official belonging to the medical education department it is very clear that the cut-offs would be high as more students are at the top this time. The schedule for counselling is not yet announced by CGHS. By Friday, the state would release the applications for MBBS/BDS admission online and this was according to Dr. Edwin Joe, DME. June 20th 2019 would be the last day for downloading the application forms.
For those students without internet facility, kiosks in the medical colleges as well as TNEA facilitation centres could be utilized to download applications. It is now said that the first round of counselling in TN would take place as soon as DGHS completes the first round of online counselling for all India quota. The information collected is in 2018 most students with scores below 250 opted for the seats in the deemed universities in the first round. In this year 2019, those students with 300 and 390 marks would opt for the deemed universities and this was as per the experts view.
An expert, Mr. Manikavel Aarumugam who has been following the medical admissions every year pointed out that in 2018 the students with lowest marks joined deemed universities in the first round as they knew that they would not get admission in less expensive government colleges or self financing colleges etc. Information is the student counsellors have been advising the students look out for other options like BDS/AYUSH/ veterinary sciences for which NEET is mandatory.
According to a NEET coach, Mr. Saravana Kumar, students who are very particular about MBBS could take a break for a year and prepare well for NEET. He spoke about his students who have written NEET for second and third time and have got very high scores.
