Symptoms of cyclone signal - Prospects of rain in Tamil Nadu Western Districts

With the intensification of the southwest monsoon rainy season in Kerala, a low-pressure zone has formed over the Arabian Sea which has given symptoms of the formation of a cyclone.

The onset of the southwest monsoon rainy season in Kerala is usually on 1st June – however, this year (2019), it has been delayed and started late. Due to the depression zone formed over the Arabian Sea, an orange alert has been issued to 8 districts in Kerala and red alert has been issued to 4 districts – Trichur, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kozhikode - in Kerala.

The fishermen from Kerala and Lakhdiv Islands have been warned not to venture into the sea for fishing.

In this situation, the weather centre in Thiruvananthapuram of IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has informed that as a depression zone had formed over the southwest Arabian Sea, a new storm signal has been indicated due to the above depression zone over the southeast Arabian Sea. This will be intensifying gradually and will drift towards north or northwest and transform into a cyclone.

With the symptoms of a cyclone format, there are prospects of heavy or very heavy rains. Especially, there are very strong prospects of heavy rains on 12th June in North Malappuram and Kozhikkode areas. Also, there are prospects of heavy rains for 3 days in the coastal areas of Karnataka, Goa, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura.

IMD has informed that due to the above, the impact of the intense summer heat in the regions of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

The people of Kerala experienced a great natural disaster during August last year due to unprecedented heavy rains in the state  not experienced over the last 100 years!
