Who said T. Nagar in the Chennai city is the one and only shopping place that attracts huge crowd?
It is sensational to mention here that in the Chennai city there are half a dozen of commercial zone present and these attract many shoppers every day. The point is these shopping areas are far from being people friendly because of traffic regulations and lack of parking facilities.
Places such as Purasawalkam, George Town, Old Washermanpet and Luz Corner are some important shopping hubs in Chennai. Many shops having jewelleries, textiles, fruits and vegetables are available in these above mentioned shopping places. It is revealed that these shops have their own patrons and their own cup of owes. It is common to come across traffic congestions, haphazard parking of vehicles plus encroachments on the footpaths in these areas in Chennai.
In central Chennai is situated one of the busiest shopping hubs Purasalwalkam and crowds pour in throughout the week here. The point is walking would become very difficult during the weekends and on festival seasons as the number of people who come to purchase increases. The shocking information is many shops have extended themselves onto the footpaths leaving very less space for those who walk. Jostling for space is common here.
In addition to this, 2 wheelers are also parked on the pavements and roadsides get occupied. A frequent shopper explained how tough it was for her to shop in Purasawalkam as walking becomes next to impossible. Visitors coming for shopping here could see 2 wheelers parked on almost all the interior lines as no proper earmarked for spaces available.
President of Purasai Vyabarigal Sangam, Mr. Nagabhushanam had sent many representations to Corporation of Chennai and traffic police to improve the flow of traffic and parking facilities. The representations have not been fruitful and have fetched no results till now.
He mentioned that traffic regulation has been done for a week during festival seasons. He was of the view that if the traffic is regulated for every 2 hours in the evenings, then more than half the issues caused by traffic congestion would get solved.
