The families of the martyrs of the 2006 Parliament attacks received the medals given to them. The families had returned the medal to the President protesting against the delay of the execution of main accused Afzal Guru. President Pranab Mukherjee decided to return the medals to their owners post the execution.
Family members expressed thanks to the President and said that they were happy with the execution as it had brought meaning to the martyrdom.
The families were accompanied to Rashtrapati Bhavan by M.S. Bitta, Chairman, Anti-Terrorist Front. Mr. Bitta said, ‘(I urge) President Pranab Mukherjee to clear all pending death sentence cases at the earliest, especially the assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Rajiv Gandhi’s death (is) a great loss to the country… If required, people of the country should force the government to convict his assassins.’
