In order to at least partly alleviate the extremely acute water shortage in the Chennai Metro City, the state government of Tamil Nadu ordered that the extra water through the Cauvery integrated drinking water project should be diverted to Chennai. The state government also allocated Rs. 65 Croes for this purpose.
Subsequently, the laying of giant pipes from the water tank located at Mettu Chakkarakuppam Region to Jolarpettai Railway Station has been completed successfully.
Presently, the CMWSSB (Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board) authorities are now engaged in the next phase of work. They informed that 98% of the work has been completed and it is all set to transport water by train from today (Wednesday, 10th July) from Jolarpettai to Chennai.
