The Supreme Court has fined Sterlite Industries Rs. 100 crore for not adhering to pollution control norms. The fine comes in the wake of Sterlite’s appeal to the apex court to stay the Madras High Court order to shut down operations in its Tuticorin copper smelting plant.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had also ordered the plant to be shut down after noxious gases leaked from the plant last week. The leakage caused nausea, skin and eye irritation and breathlessness among the residents of the town.
The company has been ordered to pay the fine within five years. The Supreme Court said that any fine lower than this would not have an effect and that the fine is meant to act as a deterrent in the future.
