23-year old Mahendra Kumar of Chennai has been selected to take part in the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games to be held in June in South Korea. Mr. Kumar is the son of a construction worker and a national god medalist in Muay Thai Boxing.
The national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai Boxing is a combination of kick boxing, martial arts and regular boxing. Mr. Kumar is the recipient of body building titles such as Mr. Salem, Mr. Bharathiyar University, Mr. Kongunadu and Mr. Erode.
Speaking to the press, he said, ‘It is a great honour for me to be part of the Muay Thai boxing squad visiting South Korea in June, but many people do not know what Muay Thai boxing is… When I was in Class X, I met a Muay Thai boxer who came for a school function. Then I gradually became interested in it.A private company has agreed to fund part of my travel. I will definitely bring honour to our state and the country if the government sponsors my trip.’
