After the floods in the year 2015, the corporation planned to renovate as many as 210 water bodies in Chennai. It is now brought out that the efforts of the Chennai Corporation in renovating these water bodies are yielding good results.
It must be taken into account that many water bodies were not maintained properly and they were filled with debris and garbage after floods. By the efforts of the corporation, these water bodies now have walking tracks along their bunds plus play areas and the facilities for the residents of Chennai city.
Mr. Nandakumar, chief engineer, corporation of Chennai, explained about how large number of water bodies got benefited from this project. He shed light on how many ponds in Chennai city like Kanniammanpet pond and Kosapur pond were filled with garbage and water hyacinth in them. He concluded that these water bodies have been given new life by strengthening the bunds, by plugging sewage water inlets and by removing water hyacinth.
In the Madhavaram zone is present many water bodies and it is now said that these water bodies are also renovated. Point to be noted is people would be surprised to see the pleasant look of these water bodies now.
Information gathered is small ponds such as Pura Kulam, Samiyar Kukam, Teachers Colony Kulam, Mulla Kulam, Thamarai Kullam and Pandakulam have been converted to rainwater harvesting or RWH zones. Important piece of news is the pond located near the Taramani bus stand and the Amman-Kulam located on the Velachery- Tambaram Main Road in Pallikaranai have also been renovated.
