Chennai’s Metro Water has laid out contingency plans for the summer. Although the Department of Water Resources has announced that supply for the city’s at current rates will last till the end of July, the Metro Water Department has started renovation of its aquifer bore wells to ensure additional supply.

A source said, ‘We are planning to increase it to 25 to 30 MLD (million Litres per Day). (We have) identified 800 bore wells that needed to be rejuvenated. The water levels have dipped more than 40 to 45% when compared to last year, which has resulted in chalking out an emergency plan. (We) feel that through the contingency measures it can ensure the supply of 831 MLD of water to the city.  In addition, a survey has been carried out on identifying streetwise hand pumps. Some of the existing hand pumps are being repaired or replaced with India Mark II pumps. The repairs would be over by April 15.’
