The sensational news is under the government quota in self financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu over 52 percent of B.E/B. Tech seats did not have any takers.
On Tuesday, the seat allotment process was completed by the TNEA or Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions is known. It must be taken into account that only 83, 396 students turned up for the counselling joined engineering college under the government quota. At the end of single window counselling, still 52% seats remained vacant with no takers. When compared to the previous year, the admission figures were slightly better. Point is just 46.44 percent seats in B.E/B. Tech got filled under the government quota last year.
In this year, aspirants showed huge interests in the computer science and engineering and information technology. It was later mentioned by some professors that the choices were made out of ignorance and of the popular perception about the job opportunities.
Head of the department of electrical and electronics engineering in Anna University, Mr. Chandramohan explained about how there has been no awareness about the trends and how Digital India and the electronic industry are pushing the students away from other branches like civil, mechanical and instrumentation etc. He then spoke about how in his department just 36 students have joined till now inspite of all 60 seats allotted in the counselling. He shed light on how the government must start filling vacancies in various departments and this would trigger a recruitment drive from public sector companies and private institutions.
Point to be noted is certification of the buildings and installation by engineers must be made compulsorily and it should be national policy. This was as per Mr. Chandramohan. It was later mentioned by the principal of Government College of Engineering, Bargur, Mr. T. Alwarswamy that the fear of unknown prevents the students from taking risks of joining core engineering courses.
