Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa announced measures to tackle population growth and urban development in the State. One of the measures is building 1,500 flats in Sholinganallur in Chennai that will cost Rs. 612 crores. The building will have 10 storeys and construction will be by using ‘pre-fab technology’. The building will have separate sections for low, middle and high incomes groups.
Another measure is building a satellite city near Madurai on the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway. The township will be built at the cost of Rs. 120 crores and will cover 586.86 acres. ‘The township would have 19,500 plots to be developed at a cost of Rs 120 crore with basic amenities like drinking water, roads, drainage system, street light, rain water harvesting facilities and parks. Of this, 14,300, 2,500, 750 and 1,950 plots would be allotted to low, middle, high income groups and economically weaker sections respectively. The township would be complete with schools, commercial complexes, police station, post office, primary health centre, fire station and upgraded industrial houses funded by Tamil Nadu Housing Board’, said Ms. Jayalalithaa.
